Annual Civil War Dinner

Please join us to honor Civil War historian Jon Grinspan with the Governor Andrew Award. Dr. Grinspan earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and is a curator at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution where he collects, preserves, and tells stories using objects from historical and contemporary political events. He is also a winner of the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians, the Lincoln Forum Book Prize, and he was a finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.

The evening will begin at 6:00 pm in the Everett Bar and Granary Room, where Wendy Joseph, curator of the Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Lynn, MA, will be displaying some artifacts from the museum collection. During cocktail hour, the Hot Club of Boston, will be playing Civil War era songs. We’ll conclude the hour with the singing of The Battle Hymn of the Republic and proceed upstairs to dinner at 7:00 PM.

Dr. Grinspan will discuss his latest book, Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force that Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War. His book tells the story of the anti-slavery movement known as the Wide Awakes which started in Hartford, CT.

This event is a fundraiser for the Seven and Eight Park Street Foundation, Inc., and the Governor Andrew Award given in conjunction with the Union Club of Boston Civil War Committee.

The award is named in honor of John Albion Andrew, the 25th Governor of Massachusetts, serving between 1861 and 1866, and who was a frequent attendee at Union Club gatherings during and after the Civil War.
